The sacrifices are used by metonymy for the feast enjoyed by the worshippers where the whole animal was not burn (Prov 7:14)

Verse 3 (Prov 17:3) in another example of the way in which right conduct is treated in Proverb – not in isolation, but in the light of the fact that it is God with whom we have to do. The process used by God to try men’s hearts is as drastic as that used to refine gold. (1 Peter 1:7). There can be no superficial ethics where this is a foundation principle. (Prov 17:5) (Prov 14:31)

The cruel messenger is the messenger of the rebel’s doom, the avenger, whether human or angelic.

…quarrelling begins with a very slight friction, like a trickle through a tiny hole in a bank, so that it is wise to break off before it is aggrevated.

Verse 16 (Prov 17:16) has been taken to suggest that ‘the wise’ took a fee for their instruction, but this is not necessary. The point is simply that wisdom is an inward thing that requires a heart inclined to it.
