Lord Jesus Christ

The content of his preaching is the saving event which is Christ Jesus, who is Lord of all who accept the preaching, cf. Rom. 14:7—9. Believers are put in a relation to Christ Jesus in which He is Lord. This is Paul’s testimony when he speaks about the overwhelming significance τῆς γνώσεως Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ κυρίου μου, Phil. 3:8. Christ Jesus is the One ὃς ἐγενήθη σοφία ἡμῖν ἀπὸ θεοῦ, δικαιοσύνη τε καὶ ἁγιασμὸς καὶ ἀπολύτρωσις, 1 Cor. 1:30. It is thus evident once again that Christ is all this as the One who is commissioned by God–ἀπὸ θεοῦ. The Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν of Paul in Rom. 1:3 f. sums up the traditional confession of Jesus as the Son of God. For Paul sonship and lordship embrace the earthly and the eternal modes of Christ Jesus. In the confessional formula which rejects many gods and lords we read: ἡμῖν εἷς θεὸς ὁ πατήρ , ἐξ οὗ Ï„á½° πάντα καὶ ἡμεῖς εἰς αὐτόν, καὶ εἶς κύριος , Ἰησοῦς Χριστός, διʼ οὗ Ï„á½° πάντα καὶ ἡμεῖς διʼ αὐτοῦ, 1 Cor. 8:6.
This formulation develops what is said in the salutations: χάρις ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη ἀπὸ θεοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν καὶ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, Rom. 1:7; 1 Cor. 1:3; 2 Cor. 1:2; Gal. 1:3; Phil. 1:2; Phlm. 3, cf. also Col. 1:2; Eph. 1:2; 2 Thes. 1:2. No matter whether this statement was taken over by Paul or formulated by him, it displays a balanced structure which leads to the full designation κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός. (Lord Jesus Christ)
