Gen 42:1 When Jacob learned that there was grain for sale in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?”
\nGen 42:2 And he said, “Behold, I have heard that there is grain for sale in Egypt. Go down and buy grain for us there, that we may live and not die.”
\nGen 42:3 So ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt.
\nGen 42:4 But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with his brothers, for he feared that harm might happen to him.
\nGen 42:5 Thus the sons of Israel came to buy among the others who came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
\nGen 42:6 Now Joseph was governor over the land. He was the one who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and bowed themselves before him with their faces to the ground.
\nGen 42:7 Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he treated them like strangers and spoke roughly to them. “Where do you come from?” he said. They said, “From the land of Canaan, to buy food.”
\nGen 42:8 And Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him.
\nGen 42:9 And Joseph remembered the dreams that he had dreamed of them. And he said to them, “You are spies; you have come to see the nakedness of the land.”
\nGen 42:10 They said to him, “No, my lord, your servants have come to buy food.
\nGen 42:11 We are all sons of one man. We are honest men. Your servants have never been spies.”
\nGen 42:12 He said to them, “No, it is the nakedness of the land that you have come to see.”
\nGen 42:13 And they said, “We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan, and behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is no more.”
\nGen 42:14 But Joseph said to them, “It is as I said to you. You are spies.
\nGen 42:15 By this you shall be tested: by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from this place unless your youngest brother comes here.
\nGen 42:16 Send one of you, and let him bring your brother, while you remain confined, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you. Or else, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies.”
\nGen 42:17 And he put them all together in custody for three days.
\nGen 42:18 On the third day Joseph said to them, “Do this and you will live, for I fear God:
\nGen 42:19 if you are honest men, let one of your brothers remain confined where you are in custody, and let the rest go and carry grain for the famine of your households,
\nGen 42:20 and bring your youngest brother to me. So your words will be verified, and you shall not die.” And they did so.
\nGen 42:21 Then they said to one another, “In truth we are guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us and we did not listen. That is why this distress has come upon us.”
\nGen 42:22 And Reuben answered them, “Did I not tell you not to sin against the boy? But you did not listen. So now there comes a reckoning for his blood.”
\nGen 42:23 They did not know that Joseph understood them, for there was an interpreter between them.
\nGen 42:24 Then he turned away from them and wept. And he returned to them and spoke to them. And he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.
\nGen 42:25 And Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, and to replace every man’s money in his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. This was done for them.
\nGen 42:26 Then they loaded their donkeys with their grain and departed.
\nGen 42:27 And as one of them opened his sack to give his donkey fodder at the lodging place, he saw his money in the mouth of his sack.
\nGen 42:28 He said to his brothers, “My money has been put back; here it is in the mouth of my sack!” At this their hearts failed them, and they turned trembling to one another, saying, “What is this that God has done to us?”
\nGen 42:29 When they came to Jacob their father in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them, saying,
\nGen 42:30 “The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly to us and took us to be spies of the land.
\nGen 42:31 But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we have never been spies.
\nGen 42:32 We are twelve brothers, sons of our father. One is no more, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.’
\nGen 42:33 Then the man, the lord of the land, said to us, ‘By this I shall know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me, and take grain for the famine of your households, and go your way.
\nGen 42:34 Bring your youngest brother to me. Then I shall know that you are not spies but honest men, and I will deliver your brother to you, and you shall trade in the land.'”
\nGen 42:35 As they emptied their sacks, behold, every man’s bundle of money was in his sack. And when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid.
\nGen 42:36 And Jacob their father said to them, “You have bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and now you would take Benjamin. All this has come against me.”
\nGen 42:37 Then Reuben said to his father, “Kill my two sons if I do not bring him back to you. Put him in my hands, and I will bring him back to you.”
\nGen 42:38 But he said, “My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he is the only one left. If harm should happen to him on the journey that you are to make, you would bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.”<\/p>\n
Gen 43:1 Now the famine was severe in the land.
\nGen 43:2 And when they had eaten the grain that they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go again, buy us a little food.”
\nGen 43:3 But Judah said to him, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.’
\nGen 43:4 If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food.
\nGen 43:5 But if you will not send him, we will not go down, for the man said to us, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.'”
\nGen 43:6 Israel said, “Why did you treat me so badly as to tell the man that you had another brother?”
\nGen 43:7 They replied, “The man questioned us carefully about ourselves and our kindred, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ What we told him was in answer to these questions. Could we in any way know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down’?”
\nGen 43:8 And Judah said to Israel his father, “Send the boy with me, and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, both we and you and also our little ones.
\nGen 43:9 I will be a pledge of his safety. From my hand you shall require him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever.
\nGen 43:10 If we had not delayed, we would now have returned twice.”
\nGen 43:11 Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: take some of the choice fruits of the land in your bags, and carry a present down to the man, a little balm and a little honey, gum, myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds.
\nGen 43:12 Take double the money with you. Carry back with you the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks. Perhaps it was an oversight.
\nGen 43:13 Take also your brother, and arise, go again to the man.
\nGen 43:14 May God Almighty grant you mercy before the man, and may he send back your other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.”
\nGen 43:15 So the men took this present, and they took double the money with them, and Benjamin. They arose and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.
\nGen 43:16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Bring the men into the house, and slaughter an animal and make ready, for the men are to dine with me at noon.”
\nGen 43:17 The man did as Joseph told him and brought the men to Joseph’s house.
\nGen 43:18 And the men were afraid because they were brought to Joseph’s house, and they said, “It is because of the money, which was replaced in our sacks the first time, that we are brought in, so that he may assault us and fall upon us to make us servants and seize our donkeys.”
\nGen 43:19 So they went up to the steward of Joseph’s house and spoke with him at the door of the house,
\nGen 43:20 and said, “Oh, my lord, we came down the first time to buy food.
\nGen 43:21 And when we came to the lodging place we opened our sacks, and there was each man’s money in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. So we have brought it again with us,
\nGen 43:22 and we have brought other money down with us to buy food. We do not know who put our money in our sacks.”
\nGen 43:23 He replied, “Peace to you, do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has put treasure in your sacks for you. I received your money.” Then he brought Simeon out to them.
\nGen 43:24 And when the man had brought the men into Joseph’s house and given them water, and they had washed their feet, and when he had given their donkeys fodder,
\nGen 43:25 they prepared the present for Joseph’s coming at noon, for they heard that they should eat bread there.
\nGen 43:26 When Joseph came home, they brought into the house to him the present that they had with them and bowed down to him to the ground.
\nGen 43:27 And he inquired about their welfare and said, “Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?”
\nGen 43:28 They said, “Your servant our father is well; he is still alive.” And they bowed their heads and prostrated themselves.
\nGen 43:29 And he lifted up his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and said, “Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me? God be gracious to you, my son!”
\nGen 43:30 Then Joseph hurried out, for his compassion grew warm for his brother, and he sought a place to weep. And he entered his chamber and wept there.
\nGen 43:31 Then he washed his face and came out. And controlling himself he said, “Serve the food.”
\nGen 43:32 They served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians could not eat with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians.
\nGen 43:33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth. And the men looked at one another in amazement.
\nGen 43:34 Portions were taken to them from Joseph’s table, but Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. And they drank and were merry with him.<\/p>\n
Psa 22:1 To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
\nPsa 22:2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest.
\nPsa 22:3 Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.
\nPsa 22:4 In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them.
\nPsa 22:5 To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.
\nPsa 22:6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people.
\nPsa 22:7 All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;
\nPsa 22:8 “He trusts in the LORD; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”
\nPsa 22:9 Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts.
\nPsa 22:10 On you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother’s womb you have been my God.
\nPsa 22:11 Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help.
\nPsa 22:12 Many bulls encompass me; strong bulls of Bashan surround me;
\nPsa 22:13 they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion.
\nPsa 22:14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast;
\nPsa 22:15 my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death.
\nPsa 22:16 For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet–
\nPsa 22:17 I can count all my bones– they stare and gloat over me;
\nPsa 22:18 they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.<\/p>\n
Mat 27:1 When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.
\nMat 27:2 And they bound him and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate the governor.
\nMat 27:3 Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders,
\nMat 27:4 saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.”
\nMat 27:5 And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself.
\nMat 27:6 But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is blood money.”
\nMat 27:7 So they took counsel and bought with them the potter’s field as a burial place for strangers.
\nMat 27:8 Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.
\nMat 27:9 Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel,
\nMat 27:10 and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.”
\nMat 27:11 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You have said so.”
\nMat 27:12 But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer.
\nMat 27:13 Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?”
\nMat 27:14 But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.
\nMat 27:15 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted.
\nMat 27:16 And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.
\nMat 27:17 So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”
\nMat 27:18 For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up.
\nMat 27:19 Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.”
\nMat 27:20 Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.
\nMat 27:21 The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.”
\nMat 27:22 Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!”
\nMat 27:23 And he said, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!”
\nMat 27:24 So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood; see to it yourselves.”
\nMat 27:25 And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!”
\nMat 27:26 Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.
\nMat 27:27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor’s headquarters, and they gathered the whole battalion before him.
\nMat 27:28 And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,
\nMat 27:29 and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
\nMat 27:30 And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head.
\nMat 27:31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him.
\nMat 27:32 As they went out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. They compelled this man to carry his cross.
\nMat 27:33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull),
\nMat 27:34 they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it.
\nMat 27:35 And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots.
\nMat 27:36 Then they sat down and kept watch over him there.
\nMat 27:37 And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”
\nMat 27:38 Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.
\nMat 27:39 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads
\nMat 27:40 and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”
\nMat 27:41 So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying,
\nMat 27:42 “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.
\nMat 27:43 He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.'”
\nMat 27:44 And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way.
\nMat 27:45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
\nMat 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
\nMat 27:47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.”
\nMat 27:48 And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink.
\nMat 27:49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.”
\nMat 27:50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.
\nMat 27:51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
\nMat 27:52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised,
\nMat 27:53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
\nMat 27:54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
\nMat 27:55 There were also many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him,
\nMat 27:56 among whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
\nMat 27:57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus.
\nMat 27:58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him.
\nMat 27:59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud
\nMat 27:60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away.
\nMat 27:61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.
\nMat 27:62 The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate
\nMat 27:63 and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’
\nMat 27:64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.”
\nMat 27:65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.”
