SECOND CLEMENT (2 Clement)
\nTranslated by J.B. Lightfoot. <\/p>\n

2Clem 1:1
\n Brethren, we ought so to think of Jesus Christ, as of God, as of the
\nJudge of quick and dead.<\/p>\n

2Clem 1:2
\nAnd we ought not to think mean things of our Salvation: for when we
\nthink mean things of Him, we expect also to receive mean things. And
\nthey that listen as concerning mean things do wrong; and we ourselves
\ndo wrong, not knowing whence and by whom and unto what place we were
\ncalled, and how many things Jesus Christ endured to suffer for our
\nsakes.<\/p>\n

2Clem 1:3
\nWhat recompense then shall we give unto Him? Or what fruit worthy of
\nHis own gift to us? And how many mercies do we owe to Him!<\/p>\n

2Clem 1:4
\nFor He bestowed the light upon us; He spake to us, as a father to his
\nsons; He saved us, when we were perishing.<\/p>\n

2Clem 1:5
\nWhat praise then shall we give to Him? Or what payment of recompense
\nfor those things which we received?<\/p>\n

2Clem 1:6
\nWe who were maimed in our understanding, and worshipped stocks and
\nstones and gold and silver and bronze, the works of men; and our
\nwhole life was nothing else but death. While then we were thus
\nwrapped in darkness and oppressed with this thick mist in our vision,
\nwe recovered our sight, putting off by His will the cloud wherein we
\nwere wrapped.<\/p>\n

2Clem 1:7
\nFor He had mercy on us, and in His compassion saved us, having beheld
\nin us much error and perdition, even when we had no hope of
\nsalvation, save that which came from Him.<\/p>\n

2Clem 1:8
\nFor He called us, when we were not, and from not being He willed us
\nto be.<\/p>\n

2Clem 2:1
\n Rejoice, thou barren that barest not. Break out and cry, thou that
\ntravailest not; for more are the children of the desolate than of
\nher that hath the husband. In that He said Rejoice, thou barren
\nthat barest not, He spake of us: for our Church was barren, before
\nthat children were given unto her.<\/p>\n

2Clem 2:2
\nAnd in that He said, Cry aloud, thou that travailest not, He
\nmeaneth this; Let us not, like women in travail, grow weary of
\noffering up our prayers with simplicity to God.<\/p>\n

2Clem 2:3
\nAgain, in that He said, For the children of the desolate are more
\nthan of her that hath the husband, He so spake, because our people
\nseemed desolate and forsaken of God, whereas now, having believed, we
\nhave become more than those who seemed to have God.<\/p>\n

2Clem 2:4
\nAgain another scripture saith, I came not to call the righteous,
\nbut sinners.<\/p>\n

2Clem 2:5
\nHe meaneth this; that it is right to save them that are perishing.<\/p>\n

2Clem 2:6
\nFor this indeed is a great and marvelous work, to establish, not
\nthose things which stand, but those which are falling.<\/p>\n

2Clem 2:7
\nSo also Christ willed to save the things which were perishing And He
\nsaved many, coming and calling us when we were even now perishing.<\/p>\n

2Clem 3:1
\n Seeing then that He bestowed so great mercy on us; first of all,
\nthat we, who are living, do not sacrifice to these dead gods, neither
\nworship them, but through Him have known the Father of truth. What
\nelse is this knowledge to Himward, but not to deny Him through whom
\nwe have known Him?<\/p>\n

2Clem 3:2
\nYea, He Himself saith, Whoso confesseth Me, Him will I confess
\nbefore the Father.<\/p>\n

2Clem 3:3
\nThis then is our reward, if verily we shall confess Him through whom
\nwe were saved.<\/p>\n

2Clem 3:4
\nBut wherein do we confess Him? When we do that which He saith and are
\nnot disobedient unto His commandments, and not only honor Him
\nwith our lips, but with our whole heart and with our whole
\nmind.<\/p>\n

2Clem 3:5
\nNow He saith also in Isaiah, This people honoreth me with their
\nlips, but their heart is far from Me.<\/p>\n

2Clem 4:1
\n Let us therefore not only call Him Lord, for this will not save us:<\/p>\n

2Clem 4:2
\nfor He saith, Not every one that saith unto Me, Lord, shall be
\nsaved, but he that doeth righteousness.<\/p>\n

2Clem 4:3
\nSo then, brethren, let us confess Him in our works, by loving one
\nanother, by not committing adultery nor speaking evil one against
\nanother nor envying, but being temperate, merciful, kindly. And we
\nought to have fellow-feeling one with another and not to be covetous.
\nBy these works let us confess Him, and not by the contrary.<\/p>\n

2Clem 4:4
\nAnd we ought not rather to fear men but God.<\/p>\n

2Clem 4:5
\nFor this cause, if ye do these things, the Lord said, Though ye be
\ngathered together with Me in My bosom, and do not My commandments,
\nI will cast you away and will say unto you, Depart from Me, I know
\nyou not whence ye are, ye workers of iniquity.<\/p>\n
