The Way of Wisdom

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

— Romans 12:2

When it comes to the subject of God’s will, I find rampant misunderstanding and confusion among Christians. I hear the desperation in people’s questions:

” Can I ever be sure about what God wants me to do?
” What if I discover I’ve been doing something other than His will?
” If I somehow stepped out of God’s will at some point, can I ever get back on track, or is my case hopeless? This last question is almost double-decker despair-since I feel like I’ve already missed God’s will in the past, does He have a “plan B” will for my future?

If these are questions you never think about, then I would conclude you are living in willful ignorance. And if you want to stay that way, don’t read this book!

Thinking about God’s will starts almost as soon as you realize there is a God. In fact, a lot of people refuse to believe God exists precisely because they don’t want to face the questions they know will automatically come as soon as they accept God’s existence-if there is a God, what does He expect of me? Why did He make me? Does He have some purpose for my life? Those questions are so terrifying for some people that they prefer to simply reject the very idea of God’s existence. If that’s where you’ve been hiding from reality, I’ve got good news for you. You can stop trying to hide from God’s will. It’s an impossible mission. In fact, facing and understanding God’s will may be the most exciting adventure you’ve ever had. That would be a great reason for reading this book!

If you are sure God has a will and are wondering whether a book on God’s will can help you, let me assure you it can. This is especially true if you are like countless people I meet who try to live under the traditional view of God’s will. If your understanding of God’s will makes you nervous, frustrated, and discouraged, take a deep breath because you are about to discover that the traditional view of God’s will has a major flaw-it’s not biblical. If this is the case, then the problems you are having with God’s will may be about your understanding and application of God’s will, not God’s will itself. Now that’s a wise reason to read this book!
