THE FORETELLING OF THE GLORY

The Letters of Peter, William Barclay – pages 213, 214

10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully,
11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.
12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
— 1 Peter 1:10-12

Here we have the great truth that inspiration depends on two things- the searching mind of man, and the revealing Spirit of God.

…this passage tells us the great truth that God’s truth comes only to the man who searches for it, that inspiration comes when the revelation of the Spirit of God meets the searching of the mind of man.

…wherever men have laid hold on truth, wherever men have had longings for God or true thoughts about God, the Spirit of Christ was there. Never has there been any time in any nation when the Spirit of Christ was not moving men to seek, and guiding men to find, God.

…sometimes they grasped but fragments of it… but always that revealing Spirit has been there to meet and to guide the searching mind.

“I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither”
— Deuteronomy 34:1-4

Someone tells of watching one night at dusk a lamplighter, who was himself blind, lighting the lamps. He tapped his way from lamp-post to lamp-post bringing to others a light which he himself would never see. As the great prophets knew, it is a great gift to receive the vision, even if the fulfillment and the consummation of the vision is for others who are still to come.

On this day...
