THE MESSAGE OF THE PREACHER

The Letters of Peter, William Barclay, pages 214, 215

10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully,
11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.
12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
— 1 Peter 1:10-12

…preaching is the announcement of salvation…

…fundamentally it is the proclamation of the gospel.

…beyond all else, the message of the preacher is the announcement of salvation.

The preacher’s message is not his own: it is given to him. He brings, not his own opinions and views and even prejudices; he brings the truth as given to him by the Holy Spirit. Like the prophet he will have to search and enquire; he will have to study and to learn; but having searched and enquired, having studied and learned, he must then wait, for the voice and the guidance of the Spirit to come to him.

It is with the message of salvation and the inspiration of the Spirit of Christ that the preacher must ever appear before men.
